This service allows you to request the revalidation of the driving license.
The driving license must be renewed during the 6 months prior to the end of the validity period, which depends on the age or category of vehicle for which you have a license.

What I need
- Model 1-IMTT;
- Original driving licence;
- Presentation of the Identity Card + Taxpayer, or Citizen Card (accompanied by proof of renewal when expired), or Photocopy of the Residence Permit.
- Medical Report proving physical and mental fitness to drive motor vehicles (when applicable, Group II).
- Medical Certificate (electronic issuance and transmission, valid for 6 months from the date of issue).

When to do
The revalidation of the driving license must be carried out during the 6 months prior to the day on which they complete the mandatory ages, that is, the driving license is valid until the eve of the birthday.
After the driving licence has expired, it is still possible to revalidate it up to a maximum of two years after the deadline stipulated for this purpose. After two years, the driving licence expires, and it is necessary, in order to obtain a new driving licence, to pass an examination (special exam – practical test).

Revalidation Deadlines
After the driving licence has expired, it is possible to revalidate it up to two years later, that is, until the eve of the driver's birthday.
With the entry into force of Decree-Law No. 40/2016, of 29 July, the validity of driving licences (Driving Licences and Licences) will be subject to one of the three situations below:
- Driving license whose first issuance* occurred from 30/07/2016 (inclusive).
- Driving Licenses whose first issuance* occurred between 02/01/2013 and 29/07/2016 (inclusive).
- Driving Licences whose first issue* occurred before 02/01/2013
*The first issue is the date on which the driving licence was first obtained. See on the back of the driving licence the first date of issue of the categories.
Other changes applied to driving licenses
Drivers in categories AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B and BE and holders of driving licenses who have obtained their driving license for the first time, aged 58 or over, are exempt from revalidating driving licenses at the age of 60
.Decree-Law No. 40/2016, of 29/7 - which amends the Highway Code and Decree-Law No. 138/2012, of 5/7, which approves the Regulation of Legal Qualification to Drive (RHLC) - introduces some administrative simplification measures in terms of the dematerialization of supporting documentation, among which the obligation to issue and electronically transmit medical certificates proving physical and mental fitness to drive motor vehicles stands out.
Belong to group 1
Candidates or drivers of vehicles in categories AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B and BE (motorcycles and light vehicles), mopeds and agricultural tractors.
Drivers who qualify for the 1st time aged 58 or over will carry out the 1st revalidation at the age of 65
Belong to group 2
Candidates or drivers of vehicles of categories C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE (heavy goods and passengers), as well as drivers of categories B and BE (light and light vehicles with trailers) who drive ambulances, fire brigade vehicles, patient transport, school transport, collective transport of children, and rental cars.
Driving licences in categories D1, D1E, D and DE, as well as in category CE whose maximum authorised mass exceeds 20 000 kg, expire on the date on which the holder reaches the age of 67.
Observations/Exceptions
Article 130 EC – expiry and cancellation of driving licence
The revalidation of an expired driving license is subject to the approval of its holder in a special driving test (practical test) if the expiry occurred more than two years ago, with the exception of the revalidation of titles in categories AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B, BE whose holders have not completed 50 years of age;
If the driver is subject to the use of "corrective glasses", in the photograph he must be wearing glasses. In this case, the glasses may not be smoked.
Licences that have expired for more than 5 years are no longer cancelled. According to the new legislation (DL 102-B/2020), they will be subjected to training and practical examination. Drivers in these conditions should contact DSVTT services.
RIAC only provides informative content for categories C and D.
