Renewal of the Recreational Navigator’s License
Recreational boating in the Azores offers a unique way to explore the islands and the richness of their marine life. The archipelago provides a singular maritime experience for sailors and nautical activity enthusiasts.
The navigator’s license is a mandatory qualification to operate recreational vessels of certain characteristics and within specific navigation areas. This document certifies that the holder possesses the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate safely.
If you are licensed with a recreational navigator’s license, please pay attention to the renewal conditions. The renewal request can be submitted at any RIAC Shop.
Holders of recreational navigator’s licenses valid as of November 14, 2018, may apply for renewal, regardless of the original issue date. Once the license expires, it may still be renewed if the holder passes an examination.
The renewal must be requested within the last 30 days of the license’s validity. After the age of 69, the license expires on the holder’s birthday. From the age of 70, the license must be renewed every 5 years, and from the age of 80, every 2 years. Renewal cannot be requested before the start of the respective 30-day period.
The renewal can also be requested by a representative, provided they present a declaration or power of attorney for that purpose, or by the legal representative of a minor (parent/guardian).
